Nara Hotel
Nara, Japan · Independent · September 2026

Set on a wooded rise beside Nara Park, Nara Hotel is one of Japan’s enduring classic hotels, founded in 1909 and still defined by the character of its historic Main Building. Designed in a Japanese-Western style associated with architect Kingo Tatsuno, the property combines dark timber, traditional detailing and a quietly formal atmosphere with the practical comforts of a contemporary hotel. Its 114 rooms are arranged between the original Main Building and the renewed West Wing, offering a range of classic and modern accommodation styles. Dining is central to the experience, from the long-established Main Dining Room Mikasa, known for seasonal French cuisine, to Teppanyaki Hanagiku and the hotel’s tea-lounge and bar spaces. With banquet facilities, a wedding chapel and easy access to Nara’s temples, museum district and deer-filled parkland, the hotel suits travellers who prefer a strong sense of place over a standardised chain setting.
